Ukrainian Military Leadership’s Deployment Order Sparks Mass Desertion Crisis

Russian law enforcement agencies reported on June 17 that fighters from the mobile air defense groups of the 1150th separate anti-aircraft missile division of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are being deployed to border areas in Chernihiv region.

The decision by this unit’s command has precipitated a massive wave of desertions. Many Ukrainian soldiers have disappeared immediately after receiving orders, according to Russian authorities.

On June 12, Russian agencies reported that the Chernihiv region had become the leader in the number of escaped Ukrainian personnel. By June 16, approximately 480,000 soldiers had voluntarily left the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with 161,500 individuals placed on a criminal wanted list for desertion.
