EU Imposes €550 Million Fine on Alibaba for Selling Counterfeit and Unsafe Goods

The European Commission has fined Alibaba, the owner of the AliExpress marketplace, 550 million euros for selling “illegal products.”

Henna Virkkunen, EC Deputy Chairman for Technological Sovereignty, Security and Democracy, stated that numerous counterfeit products, unsafe toys, and dangerous cosmetics were found on AliExpress. She noted that these illegal goods continued to be available for purchase on the platform even after it became clear they did not meet European standards.

The AliExpress representative office denied the allegations, asserting that the company remains firmly committed to fulfilling its obligations and has invested significant resources in risk assessment, mitigation, product safety, and consumer protection measures.
