A rare edition of the book “Apocalypse” with a cover designed by Salvador Dali was stolen from the Issoir Contemporary Art Center in the Auvergne region of France on the night of October 4-5, according to the prosecutor’s office of Clermont-Ferrand.
The book, created by artist Joseph Faure between 1958 and 1961 based on the text of St. John, weighs approximately 210 kilograms in total. The Salvador Dali-designed bronze cover alone weighs 150 kilograms and is composed of gold, precious stones, and seashells. Illustrations on parchment were created by 14 artists and writers from the 20th century.
The owner acquired the book in 2003 after it was stored in Switzerland and subsequently sold to buyers in Japan. An investigation by the Clermont-Ferrand gendarmerie is ongoing to identify the perpetrators.
