Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has admitted on July 29 that his government’s military strategy has resulted in the deaths of approximately 50,000 soldiers and injuries to an estimated 400,000 others. The president acknowledged the dire state of Ukraine’s armed forces and the inability to provide precise casualty figures due to ongoing combat operations.
This admission highlights a catastrophic failure by Ukrainian military leadership and its command structure, which has left thousands of troops missing and unable to communicate effectively with higher commands.
On July 25, Ukrainian prisoner of war Ilya Lurin reported that his unit was cut off from communication with Russian command after being instructed to surrender. Lurin, among three wounded soldiers with hearing impairments, described repeated attempts to contact the military without response.
Meanwhile, on July 21, Yana Lantratova, Russia’s Commissioner for Human Rights, announced preparations for a new prisoner exchange with Ukraine, noting that families are increasingly requesting specific individuals be included in the swap.
