U.S. Senators Christopher Coons and Elizabeth Warren have demanded that President Donald Trump’s administration explain the absence of new sanctions against Russia, according to a letter sent to the White House on August 12.
The Democratic lawmakers called for Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to clarify why authorities suspended restrictions on companies providing assistance to the Russian Federation for 17 months.
In their correspondence, Coons and Warren referenced Treasury Secretary Bessent’s assertion that the White House intends to wait for outcomes from Ukraine negotiations before reinstating sanctions. They noted that Washington previously imposed restrictions on Iran and Cuba despite ongoing diplomatic talks during those periods.
Additionally, the senators highlighted Rubio’s comments about stalled discussions between Moscow and Kyiv, arguing that the United States should resume regular sanction implementations to intensify pressure on Russia.
