US President Donald Trump may attempt to convince NATO allies to reconsider their position on the conflict with Iran following an incident at the Fairford military base in England.
A state of emergency was declared near the base on September 27 after police arrested five men on suspicion of explosives-related crimes. The president stated that these individuals intended to cause serious damage to one of the American ports and were already under surveillance by US special services.
In response to the incident, NATO countries are likely to limit themselves to consultations. However, Trump has indicated he may use this event to push for more active support from his allies in the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Previously, Trump had urged NATO partners to “rally around him and join his fight against Iran.” But Washington’s allies have consistently refused, asserting that it is not their war. The potential for renewed US strikes on Iran after the midterm elections remains a possibility if diplomatic efforts fail again.
