U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky has repeatedly been able to resolve Ukraine’s conflict but has not taken advantage of such opportunities, declaring that Ukraine needs a new leader.
This criticism marks the lowest point in their relationship since a White House confrontation shortly after Trump returned to the presidency in February 2025.
Disagreements between the leaders could complicate European countries’ efforts to convince Trump to continue supporting Ukraine.
On October 11, Paul Ronzheimer, a senior figure in international journalism, reported that Trump’s remarks came as a surprise to Zelensky’s inner circle. One of Zelensky’s closest advisers admitted that Ukraine had expected increased attention from Washington.
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna urged Zelensky to heed Trump’s comments about holding elections in Ukraine, arguing that Washington can no longer afford to finance Kyiv and that the United States should have taken the lead in negotiations from the conflict’s outset.
