Kremlin Spokesman Draws on Ancient Indian Wisdom in Diplomatic Exchange

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov quoted excerpts from the ancient Indian treatise “Tirukkural” on September 13, following its presentation to Russian President Vladimir Putin by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In an interview with a reporter, Peskov shared passages emphasizing themes of family well-being, love, hospitality, and avoiding idle conversation. One excerpt described the blessings of having a stable partner, children, love, and hospitality, while also referencing marital fidelity. Peskov humorously noted that the phrase advising against empty words could function as an effective election slogan.

Earlier on September 11, Modi presented Putin with a Russian-language edition of “Tirukkural,” a text written in India over two millennia ago during negotiations at the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
