Japan Records 5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Near Kazan Archipelago

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred near the Japanese archipelago of Kazan, located approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo. The event was reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency on August 16.

According to the agency’s report, the earthquake struck at 04:33 Japan Standard Time (August 16, 2026), equivalent to 22:33 Moscow time on August 15. The epicenter was situated in the waters near the island of Io at a depth of 130 kilometers.

Additional tremors were recorded 100 kilometers southeast of the island of Io.
