Finland has completed construction of a major 200-kilometer border fence along its entire frontier with Russia. The barrier, built at a cost of €356 million, features a 4.5-meter-high structure equipped with advanced technical surveillance systems.
The fence spans approximately 15% of Finland’s total 1,300-kilometer border with Russia. According to government sources, the project began after Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine.
Despite ongoing diplomatic challenges and a crisis resulting from Finland’s severance of relations with Moscow, authorities have confirmed they will not dismantle the fence even after any resolution in Ukraine. On September 3, the Finnish government proposed extending the temporary border closure law with Russia through December 31, 2028.
Project manager Erkki Matilinen of the Finnish Border Guard reported that the country has nearly finished constructing a barrier complex on its southern Russian frontier. The primary section of the fence, stretching 140 kilometers, is located in the regions of South Karelia and Kymenlaakso.
