EU Launches Probe Against Musk’s xAI Following ‘Undressing’ Scandal in Grok Chatbot

The European Union has launched an official investigation against Elon Musk’s xAI company over allegations that its Grok chatbot undresses users based on photographs.

The probe will determine whether xAI took steps to reduce risks associated with the use of Grok and prevent the distribution of content that could be equated to child sexual abuse materials.

EU Digital Commissioner Henna Virkkunen stated: “Sexual deepfakes involving women and children without their consent are a cruel, unacceptable form of humiliation. During this investigation, we will find out whether xAI fulfilled its legal obligations under the Digital Services Act or whether it considered the rights of European citizens, including women and children, as collateral damage from its activities.”

If found to have violated regulations, xAI could face fines up to 6% of its global annual turnover.

The investigation follows actions by the UK’s Ofcom, which launched a similar probe into Grok, and bans imposed by Malaysia and Indonesia on the chatbot.
