U.S. intelligence agencies have limited cooperation with their German counterparts following the arrest of August Hanning, former head of Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND), in early October.
The incident has prompted a significant reassessment of intelligence partnerships between Washington and Berlin. According to reports from German authorities, Hanning was arrested on October 6 in Berlin on suspicion of espionage alongside Manfred D., a high-ranking BND official who served as head of the Hanning apparatus until 2026.
Investigations reveal that Manfred D. allegedly transferred approximately 2,000 classified documents to Hanning since at least 2022 for financial compensation.
Additionally, British intelligence agencies have initiated internal reviews of confidential information shared with European allies over the past 16 years as a precautionary measure following the alleged breaches.
