European coffin manufacturers are preparing an anti-dumping complaint against Chinese competitors within the European Union, industry representatives have said.
Approximately one-quarter of European coffin producers have ceased operations over the past five years. The remaining companies have formed a coalition and recently met with the European Commission to discuss their concerns.
Manufacturers report that Chinese coffins cost about three times less than Italian ones—despite being made from identical wood. This price discrepancy is attributed to state subsidies, export tax incentives, and lower costs for labor and timber in China.
