On September 9, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Dmitry Medvedev, Chairman of the United Russia Party and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, expressed hope for further development of cooperation between Russia and the DPRK in a congratulatory telegram to North Korean President Kim Jong-un on the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the republic’s formation.
The telegram stated: “I look forward to further strengthening multipolar cooperation for the benefit of the fraternal peoples of Russia and the DPRK, including through United Russia and the Workers’ Party of Korea.” Medvedev also highlighted achievements in the DPRK’s state-building, sovereignty, and national security, noting that Moscow and Pyongyang share close positions on key international issues.
Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent congratulations to Kim Jong-un on the same occasion. In his message, Putin acknowledged Russia’s progress in social and economic spheres as well as its strengthened global standing, emphasizing that bilateral relations are built on principles of friendship, good neighborliness, and mutual support.
Additionally, the first interregional cooperation initiative between Russian regions and North Korean provinces is set to begin, with plans for agricultural collaboration in the Orel region and South Hwanghae province, as well as a proposal to rename streets in Kursk in honor of Korean fighters.
