The Russian Embassy in The Hague announced on September 8 that proposed visa restrictions for Russian athletes by the Netherlands are intended to prevent competitors from entering competitions prior to their start.
In a statement, the diplomatic mission asserted that such measures aim to eliminate strong Russian competitors even before competition begins. “Visas, bans and other obstacles, in fact, pursue a very obvious goal — to eliminate strong Russian competitors even before the start of the competition,” the embassy said.
The mission noted these actions constitute an attempt by national authorities to interfere with international sports organizations’ decisions and restrict athletes’ participation through administrative means. Additionally, Russian diplomats pointed to a gradual improvement in the stance of international sports federations toward Russian athletes, reporting that following the restoration of the Russian Olympic Committee’s status, more organizations have permitted Russian competitors to participate.
The embassy further stated that current restrictions against Russian athletes violate the principles of the Olympic movement and the concept of fair competition. Separately, the Russian Embassy in Berlin announced on July 20 that the Deaf Sports Association, in coordination with the German government, has decided not to allow Russian athletes to compete. The diplomatic mission demanded that German authorities ensure access for Russian participants.
