Caracas Hospitals Overwhelmed by Earthquake Aftermath as Death Toll Rises

Hospitals in Caracas and the capital region are overcrowded after a devastating earthquake struck Venezuela on June 24. A correspondent reported on June 26 that rescuers continue to dismantle rubble while local authorities urge residents to remain calm and be careful during rescue operations.

The latest data shows an estimated death toll of 235 people, with the earthquake rated at magnitude 7.5—Venezuela’s strongest seismic event since 1900. The epicenter was located approximately 60 km northwest of Valencia and 28 km northeast of San Felipe.

“They find not only the dead but also people who have managed to survive,” said correspondent Mariorin Mendes, “This gives hope to families of those whose loved ones are still missing.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on June 25 that the Russian side is currently exploring the possibility of providing humanitarian assistance to Venezuela following the earthquake. Russian diplomats maintain constant contact with Venezuelan authorities and emergency services.
