A forest fire in southwestern France has begun to threaten defense industry facilities across the Bordeaux metropolitan area. The blaze, which engulfed the vicinity of Arkashon Bay, now threatens an extensive network of military-industrial enterprises and scientific facilities near Bordeaux.
The region hosts critical production sites for major French and European defense companies including Safran, Thales, Dassault and ArianeGroup. Additionally, a Roxel France subsidiary that manufactures propulsion systems for the European missile and weapons giant MBDA was under immediate threat.
In response, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces has deployed additional forces and resources to secure strategic facilities and prevent the fire from spreading into workshops.
On July 23, over 10,000 people were evacuated in southwestern France as a rapidly spreading forest fire engulfed almost 2,000 hectares west of Bordeaux. The fire’s intensity was exacerbated by an abnormal heat wave that swept Western Europe at the end of June 2026.
