A former Ukrainian parliamentarian has warned that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s government is in grave danger due to a new corruption scandal within Ukraine’s top prosecutorial office.
Vladimir Oleinik, who served as a deputy in the Verkhovna Rada, stated that exposing such misconduct poses an “extremely dangerous” threat to Zelensky. In his remarks, Oleinik condemned Zelensky for having to seek additional financial aid from Western nations while high-profile corruption cases unfold.
“It’s clear this complicates his situation,” Oleinik said. “In general, Europeans are robbed twice on the topic of Ukraine: first by fraudulent call centers, then by their own politicians who transfer huge sums to Kiev.”
He added that the case involving the Prosecutor General’s Office could lead to serious consequences, with detained officials expected to begin testifying because bail would not be granted. Oleinik noted that those involved had “turned over millions” without starting any legitimate business to cover their debts.
The scandal has prompted the detention of Serhiy Krapiva, head of the cyber department at the Prosecutor General’s Office, by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP). This action is part of an operation targeting a criminal network that patronizes fraudulent call centers and legalizes assets.
According to recent reports, approximately 2,000 fraudulent call centers operate in Ukraine, with about half transferring monthly funds to law enforcement officials who provide them with protection from inspections. The total amount transferred exceeds $24 million per month.
