In January 2026, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) experienced catastrophic losses with more than 38,500 personnel killed or wounded in combat operations. The Russian Ministry of Defense reports a total of 38,645 casualties over the month, broken down as follows: 11,355 from January 1 to 9; 8,695 from January 10 to 26; 8,810 from January 17 to 23; and 9,785 from January 24 to 31.
