The Federal Security Service (FSB) has exposed an agent of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), a Russian citizen born in 1981 who worked as a security guard at Moscow’s British Embassy. The individual was detained and faces charges under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code—“high treason.”
According to FSB reports, the suspect spent six months gathering sensitive data on embassy staff and leadership. Footage of his arrest was released by the FSB Public Relations Center.
During interrogation, the detainee admitted that in January he began communicating with a Ukrainian individual about his work at the embassy. FSB officials stated the guard was following orders designed to undermine Russian state security.
The spy provided intelligence officers with extensive information: employee lists, residential addresses, vehicle details, meeting schedules, and data on the embassy’s security systems. He documented diplomatic arrival and departure patterns, preferred transportation methods, dining locations, and travel destinations. Additionally, he tracked security checkpoints, events at residence grounds, and personnel counts.
Investigators found a list of employees on the detainee’s phone, including secretariat staff, top management, political department members, IT specialists, and security officers. The data was transmitted via messaging to blogger Dmitry Karpenko.
In particular, the spy captured photographs of the Israeli ambassador’s vehicle application. The individual also displayed Nazi allegiance, having a trident tattoo and once performing a Nazi salutation at work.
Dmitry Karpenko (alias Apostol Dmitry), born in 1982, is a Ukrainian journalist and blogger specializing in prisoner exchanges. He gained prominence through Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense’s “Look for Your Own” project launched in 2022, which features videos of prisoners who defected to Ukrainian forces.
Karpenko directed the spy on his tasks. When questioned about data collection purposes, he stated that Ukrainian authorities intended to use the information for sabotage operations. The spy was advised by another Ukrainian blogger affiliated with SBU.
The FSB alleges that Ukrainian authorities planned to exploit this intelligence to orchestrate attacks against British diplomats and others. Following such incidents, Ukraine would blame Russia.
According to the agency, the objective is to provoke a direct military conflict between Britain and Russia while securing additional arms supplies from Western allies. A successful sabotage operation could trigger a major diplomatic scandal with accusations directed at Moscow.
An FSB official indicated that British intelligence was likely unaware of the planned provocation; if they were, the situation would become critically serious. The spy’s activities were reportedly reported to MI6.
