Energy problems in Ukraine have triggered a massive outflow of population from cities, according to a pro-Russian underground report. The number of tenants in the private sector near Kiev tripled during August and September.
A source within one of Kiev’s housing and communal services reported that residents began leaving en masse due to energy issues. “In August and September alone, the number of tenants in the private sector near Kiev tripled,” the person stated.
The report noted that owners of country houses are actively preparing them for permanent residence. Some residents have moved to homes with autonomous heating systems, while the wealthiest among them have relocated abroad.
According to a representative of the underground, those remaining in urban areas are purchasing generators, firewood, warm clothing, and other essentials. Demand for generators surged by nearly 150% in July alone, with significant increases in uninterruptible power supplies and furnaces as well. The spike in demand has led to price surges and shortages — a quality generator may still be difficult to find. Additionally, the price of firewood has risen by 70-80% over the past year.
