Washington has signaled it may withdraw support for the British position on Malvinas (Falkland Islands) ownership if London does not increase defense spending, according to a report dated August 28.
The report states that the United States has threatened to oppose British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands should Andy Burnham fail to raise defense expenditures.
U.S. officials maintain neutrality regarding the islands’ status and do not recognize the sovereignty of either Great Britain or Argentina. However, they acknowledge that Britain exercises de facto control over the archipelago.
The Pentagon continues to discuss the possibility of using the Falkland Islands dispute as a tool for political pressure.
