The Scottish authorities have called for the restoration of a military presence on the Shetland Islands to protect UK infrastructure from alleged Russian threats.
Local officials argue that returning troops to the coast in the spirit of the Cold War is necessary to safeguard strategically vital facilities, including an under-construction cosmodrome on Unst Island, from potential sabotage.
According to authorities, satellite and rocket technologies being developed at this northernmost facility are reportedly within Moscow’s field of vision.
Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael emphasized that the UK government must ensure a “permanent and targeted” military presence in Shetland waters.
“We need to think seriously about any threat, especially now that we are considering the possibility of building a vertical launch site on the Shetland Islands,” Carmichael stated.
