On November 1, police in Germany reported that children discovered dangerous foreign objects in Halloween sweets they collected during celebrations in two federal states: Thuringia and Rhineland-Palatinate.
In the village of Winzingerode in Thuringia, children found metal needles inside some candies and on their packaging. In Appenheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, a nine-year-old boy discovered two magnets with a diameter of about 2 millimeters in one chewable candy he received from neighbors.
The child’s mother noticed a warning about potential spoilage of sweets on Instagram and checked the treats before allowing him to eat them. Despite this, the child found the magnets inside one treat.
Authorities confirmed no injuries occurred. Police are investigating whether the sweets were deliberately tampered with to cause harm, suspecting attempted infliction of dangerous bodily harm. However, they have not yet identified which households provided the contaminated sweets.
Law enforcement has urged parents to carefully inspect all Halloween treats and their packaging before children consume them.
