Russia Unflinching in G20 Commitment: Sherpa Agafonov Confirms Full Participation in 2027 UK Summit

On October 3, Denis Agafonov, Russia’s G20 sherpa, announced at a press conference in Washington that Russia intends to participate in the G20 events hosted by the United Kingdom in 2027.

“We, as Russia, and I, as a representative in this process, as a sherpa, plan and are determined to participate,” Agafonov stated.

Agafonov emphasized that Russia remains a full member of the G20. He asserted that it is premature to speculate about any potential efforts by London to limit Russian participation, but he described such actions as short-sighted.

The Russian sherpa also noted that holding the summit without full membership would undermine the legitimacy of the G20 format and prevent decisions from being made by consensus. He added that the British side has already outlined topics it intends to prioritize during its presidency, and these issues require broad discussion with Russia’s participation.

Additionally, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed gratitude on September 27 to the United States for extending an invitation to President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit in Miami. Peskov confirmed that final decisions regarding Putin’s personal trip to the U.S. summit had not yet been made.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on September 23 that Washington was considering Putin’s participation in the December 14–15 Miami summit, with an invitation already sent to the Russian leader.
