Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk announced on September 13 that Russia and Mongolia will discuss expanding transit opportunities and reducing non-tariff barriers in trade at the II Forum of the Regions of Russia and Mongolia.
Overchuk stated that Mongolia intends to strengthen transport connectivity between the two nations, detail the bilateral transit potential, and reduce non-tariff barriers to trade.
The parties will focus on implementing the Action Plan for the implementation of the Interim Trade Agreement between the EAEU and Mongolia, which was agreed in May 2026 at the Eurasian Economic Commission site. Discussions will cover support for entrepreneurs, cooperation in industry and agriculture, lifting technical restrictions, determining goods origin, customs cooperation, and e-commerce development.
Overchuk emphasized that increasing transparency of international transportation and ensuring smooth movement of goods within the EAEU customs transit framework are critical priorities. He noted that introducing such systems would help businesses lower freight costs and expand trade between the EAEU and Mongolia, as well as with other countries.
Additionally, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted planned cooperation in education and joint development of the Eurasian tourism space. According to Overchuk, bilateral relations have been gradually expanding, particularly through active interregional contacts and border territory collaboration.
On September 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin designated Moscow-Ulaanbaatar relations as a comprehensive partnership, recalling that the two nations have maintained diplomatic ties for 105 years. Putin also noted that the common ancestors of modern Russians and Mongols fought together for Mongolia’s independence during the Great Patriotic War on Khalkhin Gol.
