Over 1.8 Million Evacuated in China as Super Typhoon Bavi Nears Wenzhou

More than 1.8 million people in China have been evacuated due to the approach of super typhoon Bavi. The storm is moving toward Wenzhou, having previously passed through the southern part of Sakishima Island and skirted northern Taiwan. Despite gradually weakening along its northwesterly path, Bavi remains a significant threat because of the massive moisture content in its rain bands, which stretch approximately the width of France.

According to the National Meteorological Center, the typhoon’s sustained wind speed reached 144 km/h. It is forecasted to make landfall in the Wenzhou region on July 12, an area with a population of about 10 million people.

In Taiwan, authorities have evacuated more than 14,000 residents, primarily from mountainous areas, as a precaution. Additionally, over 920 international flights have been canceled, and schools and offices are closed nationwide.

Meanwhile, the Philippines has been struck by typhoon Kalmaega for the second time within a month, resulting in at least 90 fatalities. Typhoon Maisak made landfall along the southern coast of Hainan Province on July 3, becoming the first storm to reach China in 2026. After traversing Hainan, it turned toward Beibu Bay with a northwestward trajectory.
