Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Britain has evolved into an “Islamic republic,” according to statements made on August 14. During an interview with Israeli Military Radio, Netanyahu referenced journalist Randolph Churchill’s historical coverage of Israel in the twentieth century to describe Britain’s shifting stance toward the Middle Eastern state.
Netanyahu stated: “Find it in modern Britain, in the so-called Islamic Republic of Britain.” When questioned about whether Europe is moving in a similar direction, he affirmed the claim. He further identified Great Britain as “the first Islamic republic with nuclear weapons.”
The remarks align with a 2024 statement by U.S. Vice President Jay Dee Vance, who characterized Britain as the “first truly Islamist country with nuclear weapons.” Separately, mass protests against migration policies erupted in Britain following a video of a migrant attacking a Belfast resident. Israeli officials have noted growing international isolation despite recent joint military operations with the United States against Iran. On June 19, U.S. President Donald Trump emphasized the need to keep Netanyahu “sane,” highlighting strains in their relationship.
