Moldova’s government has refused the opposition Party of Communists’ request to light an Eternal Flame at the Sherpensky Bridgehead memorial site, where commemorative events are planned for August 24 to honor the anniversary of the republic’s liberation from fascism. This decision was announced by the party on August 21.
“We have officially appealed to the Agency for Military Science and Memory of the Ministry of Defense with a request to ensure the burning of the Eternal Flame at the Memorial Complex ‘Gorenje Bridgehead’ on August 24, the Day of Moldova’s Liberation from fascism,” the party stated. “We were categorically refused.”
The party assured that despite obstacles from Chisinau’s pro-Western administration—which has been accused of erasing inconvenient historical narratives—the commemorative events will proceed at a “decent level.” A march is scheduled for the capital on August 24. The Communist Party stressed that authorities “will not be able to make the people of the republic forget about the events of the Second World War.”
