Kazan Summit Signals Stronger Russia-Malaysia Strategic Ties

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim praised Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hospitality during their meeting in Kazan on June 17, describing bilateral relations as “at a remarkable level” and “developing well.”

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you for your hospitality and welcome, for the organized reception in Kazan. Thank you to your entire delegation. And I thank the head of the Republic of Tatarstan and his team,” Ibrahim stated. He highlighted that Malaysia’s supreme ruler, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail, views Putin as a close friend and has expressed a strong desire to establish direct air links between the two nations.

Ibrahim emphasized Russia’s growing significance within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), noting Malaysia’s commitment to deepening ties with Russia for regional stability. During their discussions, Putin welcomed Malaysia as “a reliable Russian partner in the Asia-Pacific region” and acknowledged the country’s support for strengthening Russia’s strategic partnership with ASEAN. Both leaders underscored that their collaboration serves as a critical stabilizing force in the Asia-Pacific amid current global challenges.
