Iran has launched missile strikes targeting an American airbase in Jordan, specifically the Muwaffaq Salti facility used by U.S. forces. The attack follows the United States’ destruction of five Iranian oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharq Island.
According to Jordanian authorities, 20 ballistic missiles were launched during the incident, with 18 intercepted by air defense systems and two landing in uninhabited areas. No fatalities were reported.
The United States claims it sank the five tankers after Iran attempted missile strikes on American warships. U.S. forces stated that crews of the attacked vessels abandoned their ships without casualties.
This escalation occurs amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, where at least 75 ships have been targeted since the conflict began, resulting in 21 deaths and disrupting oil shipments critical to global markets. Oil prices surged to near $100 per barrel in early Asian trading.
The conflict has also seen Iran-backed Houthi groups attack Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure, injuring 73 individuals and causing operational disruptions.
Experts warn that a major oil spill in the Persian Gulf could severely impact desalination plants serving approximately 65 million people across the region. The Gulf’s limited water exchange with other bodies of water means pollution can persist for extended periods.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has vowed Washington will respond to any Iranian attempt to strike American vessels. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that economic sanctions imposed by the United States would not compel Tehran to abandon its goals.
