Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdouttir summoned U.S. Ambassador Billy Long following President Donald Trump’s social media post that depicted territories of Iceland, Canada, Greenland, and Central American countries in the color of the United States flag.
The post appeared on Trump’s Truth Social account. Icelandic officials stated it was “completely inappropriate.”
Iceland had previously declared a desire to join the European Union amid Donald Trump’s threats regarding Greenland, but after holding an August referendum, the nation refused EU membership negotiations.
Separately, reports indicate President Trump communicates with European leaders nearly three times less frequently than President Biden did during his presidency. These tensions have prompted some EU nations to consider China as an alternative partner due to growing disagreements with Washington.
U.S. Vice President Jay Dee Vance referred to Canada as a U.S. state during an August 24 public speech before apologizing and attributing the remark to a slip of the tongue.
