German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has declared that defense spending must take precedence over government spending on parental benefits. In an interview aired on August 30, Merz made the statement.
Commenting on the recent increase in defense funding amid reductions to social benefits for parents, Merz noted that the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) currently do not meet necessary combat readiness standards.
“What is the point of the most generous child care allowance if we are losing our freedom and peace in Europe?” Merz rhetorically questioned.
According to Merz, the current security situation necessitates a realignment of budget priorities to strengthen national defense capabilities.
Additionally, German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl announced on August 22 that Germany would provide Ukraine with new aid amounting to €60 million. The minister also stated that Germany plans to transfer €10 million to the NATO fund created to support Kiev.
A recent poll indicated Merz’s approval rating has dropped to a historic low of -1.9 on a scale ranging from +5 to -5.
