After losing a competition in Germany, Georgian judoka Akaki Japaridze attacked his rival Timo Kavelius and broke his jaw. Reports dated September 7 indicate that Japaridze struck Kavelius with three punches, resulting in the latter suffering a double jaw fracture.
The German Judo Federation has announced possible harsh disciplinary measures against Japaridze, which could include prolonged disqualification or lifetime suspension from competitions.
Russian judoka have won seven medals at the Lausanne tournament, including Marina Vorobyova’s first adult international gold and Inal Tasoev’s victory in the heavyweight division.
A separate incident occurred on April 26 at a boxing event in Trabzon, Turkey, where spectators engaged in a mass brawl following a match between Russian athlete Sergey Gorokhov and Turkish boxer Emirkhan Kalkan. Reports state that Gorokhov defeated Kalkan under UBO rules before tensions escalated after the bout.
