On Tuesday, French authorities detained 488 individuals during mass student protests that began on September 28. The demonstrations, initially triggered by teacher shortages and overcrowded classrooms, have grown to involve high school students and public sector workers.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed the detention figure. At least 43 law enforcement officers were injured during the protests. Official reports indicate that over 215 students and 85 education staff sustained injuries, with 715 law enforcement personnel affected.
In response to the escalating unrest, French President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency meeting on October 6 with Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu, and Education Minister Edouard Geffrey.
