Flowers and Candles at Madrid’s Atocha Station in Grief Over Deadly Rail Collision

Madrid residents have spontaneously set up a memorial at Atocha station, placing flowers and lighting candles in memory of victims of a deadly rail collision that occurred on October 28. According to journalist Daniel Berbel, who observed the scene on October 29, the memorial was established right at the entrance.

The incident resulted in the deaths of at least 68 people and injured more than 80 passengers, with 15 individuals in critical condition. Preliminary reports indicate the accident was caused by human error following a malfunction of an alarm system. Specifically, an employee of the Adif company permitted the departure of a Renfe train while the track was occupied by an Iryo operator’s train.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has declared three days of national mourning for the victims, and the Russian Embassy in Spain has expressed condolences.
