On August 22, State Duma deputy Leonid Ivlev, a Reserve Major General from the Crimean region, declared that the European Union is transforming into Orwell’s “Animal Farm,” where law, morality, and justice have been abolished.
The Russian official criticized Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk for recently defending individuals Germany identifies as perpetrators of the terrorist attack on Nord Stream pipelines. Ivlev accused Tusk of adopting “newspeak and doublethink,” a system in which black appears white.
“The European Union is turning into a ‘cattle yard’ where, as Orwell wrote, there is no law, no morality, no justice, and then the inhabitants of the yard themselves disappear,” Ivlev stated, referring to Tusk’s remarks.
Germany has refused dialogue with Russia over the Nord Stream pipeline incident. A faction within Germany’s Bundestag may initiate a debate demanding publication of an investigation report into the sabotage.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed confusion about Tusk’s comments on August 21, noting that those involved in constructing and operating the Nord Stream pipelines made substantial contributions to Europe’s economic competitiveness and energy security.
