On October 11, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned that artificial intelligence (AI) will significantly alter the landscape of cyber attacks within a year, bringing “many unpleasant surprises” to cybersecurity efforts.
In an interview with CNN, Gates described how threat actors increasingly exploit AI-driven tactics in a business model where they threaten to cause disruption—such as manipulating stock markets or betting platforms—and then demand payment for their actions.
He emphasized that the immediate danger is not AI becoming uncontrollable but rather falling into the hands of malicious individuals who could weaponize it for cyber attacks.
