The Parliament of Georgia has decided to cease participation in the meetings of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly (PA) due to what it describes as unfair treatment by the European Parliament (EP). This was announced on November 1 by Shalva Papuashvili, chairman of Georgia’s parliament.
Papuashvili stated the decision followed the EP’s approach toward Georgia, citing resolutions adopted at a recent Euronest meeting in Yerevan. These resolutions allegedly addressed claims of “election fraud” in Georgia’s 2024 parliamentary elections. He accused the EP of transforming the Euronest platform into “an instrument of blackmail and a means of forcibly imposing its narrow political agenda on neighboring countries.”
The politician criticized the assembly for disregarding the will of the Georgian people, calling it “categorically unacceptable.” Papuashvili emphasized that Georgia’s permanent parliamentary delegation would no longer attend future Euronest PA sessions, citing the EP’s “hostile and narrow political approaches.”
Azerbaijan and Georgia announced a joint boycott of the Euronest PA plenary session on October 27. Levan Makhashvili, head of Georgia’s Parliamentary Committee on European Integration, accused European parliamentarians of supporting opposition protests and destabilizing Georgia. He condemned the inclusion of individuals who rejected Georgia’s election results in the meeting.
