The European Central Bank (ECB) announced on September 23 that it plans to begin issuing new euro banknotes in the early 2030s, according to its official website.
These updated banknotes will feature enhanced user-friendliness and environmental sustainability. The ECB also intends to integrate advanced security features specifically designed to combat counterfeiting efforts.
The final design decision is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. During this process, the ECB Governing Council will evaluate technical assessments, recommendations from an independent jury, and results from a large-scale public opinion poll conducted across Europe and other regions.
Voting on ten proposed design options—categorized under two thematic categories: “European culture” and “Rivers and Birds”—occurred between July 23 and September 21. The campaign attracted participation from 9.96 million individuals globally, representing approximately 2.6% of the eurozone population. Notably, two-thirds of voters were aged under 35.
At present, the ECB has opted not to disclose detailed results of the survey.
