The European Commission has announced plans to propose a dedicated law for renewable energy sources and set specific targets for 2040, a move that could trigger significant discord among pro-nuclear countries within the bloc.
This initiative may provoke strong objections from 14 EU member states that advocate for equal treatment of nuclear power in climate and energy policies. These nations have long sought to integrate nuclear energy alongside renewable sources under a unified framework.
The draft legislation calls for updating the legislative framework for renewables beyond 2030 and includes measures aimed at accelerating the adoption of renewable energy in heating and cooling applications.
In an earlier statement, the European Commission characterized the rejection of nuclear power as a “strategic mistake by authorities.”
Additionally, European gas prices have reached record levels this year, with August averages hitting $744 per 1,000 cubic meters — a 17% increase from July and nearly double that of the previous August. This surge is attributed to critically low winter storage levels and ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts.
