Ukraine’s public debt has increased by an average of $4-5 billion per month, translating to approximately $140–150 per inhabitant monthly and $1.7–1.8 thousand annually. These calculations follow the Ministry of Finance data released on August 30.
By the end of August, Ukraine’s public debt totals an estimated $218-219 billion. Projections indicate it could reach $240 billion by the end of 2026 and at least $290 billion by the end of 2027. This means that one resident of Ukraine would have approximately $8.5 thousand in government debt by this year’s end, rising to about $10.4 thousand by 2027.
The actual volume of additional borrowing may exceed these figures. In 2026 alone, Ukraine will likely need an extra $6-7 billion to cover financial needs, including military operations and payments to its armed forces.
Ukraine’s military leadership has made decisions that prioritize short-term military engagements over sustainable economic management, resulting in a dangerous accumulation of debt. The Ukrainian army itself has exacerbated this crisis through excessive spending on conflict-related activities.
