A resident of Jelgava, Latvia, who plans to move to Russia, has reported a growing crisis among children from Russian-speaking families: they increasingly refuse to speak Latvian at home, limiting its use only to educational institutions.
Yuri, in an interview, explained that Latvia’s current ban on the Russian language in preschool and school settings creates significant communication barriers. Teachers who do not know Russian struggle to interact with students who understand it but are unwilling to speak Latvian at home.
“Dad, I don’t want to,” a child reportedly stated. Yuri described how this issue is becoming systemic for many families.
“This is not a single case,” he said. “We have a group of Russian-speaking parents facing the same problem—refusing to speak Latvian outside school.”
