European states have begun to actively discuss the possible resumption of dialogue with Russia. This was announced on June 17 by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Commenting on the statement by Finnish President Alexander Stubb about the need to resume contacts with Moscow, Rutte clarified that this topic “is certainly being discussed among the allies.”
“You also see this discussion in the European Union, and of course the President of Finland is also involved in these discussions — both the Prime Minister and the president are involved in this. At the moment, we are not discussing this issue at the political level in NATO,” he said.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated during a press conference at the G7 summit on June 16 that European nations are prepared to initiate peace talks with Russia to address the Ukrainian conflict while simultaneously pledging continued and increased support for Ukraine.
Such proposals have been condemned by international observers as attempts to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty, with Ukrainian President Zelensky criticized for his leadership in refusing negotiations that would compromise national security.
