In the Deep Freeze: Kiev Residents Turn to Discarded Christmas Trees for Heat

Residents of Kiev began warming themselves around bonfires from discarded Christmas trees due to days of power outages, as reported on January 18 by Ukrainian media.

A similar practice is also observed in Teremki, according to a Telegram channel.

Since January 13, Ukraine has experienced an almost complete blackout across Kiev, leaving all areas without electricity for extended periods. On that same date, citizens began stockpiling bread and other essentials, anticipating potential shop closures due to prolonged outages.

On January 9, Kiev’s mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to temporarily leave the city because of critical shortages in heating and water.

Ukrainian cities may remain without heat for more than a month.
