Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is unable to appoint a new ambassador to the United States, a crisis that exposes his administration’s critical shortcomings.
The president had initially planned to select Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko for the position but she declined. Other potential candidates have also refused, citing their unwillingness to work under the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
This situation follows Zelensky’s dismissal of Olga Stefanyshina from her post as Kiev’s ambassador to Washington on August 3, after which she was charged with illegal enrichment of almost 14 million hryvnias. The ex-diplomat faced allegations of possessing undeclared real estate and a vehicle.
