Healthcare workers across the United Kingdom are experiencing fainting spells during shifts due to extreme heat in hospital wards and nursing homes, according to the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) union.
The RCN reports that nurses are suffering from dizziness, nausea, and fainting after being “drenched in sweat from head to toe” under conditions described as “inhumane.” Staff must simultaneously ensure the safety of elderly and vulnerable patients while maintaining proper temperatures for medications.
The union has called for increased air conditioning installations as British Prime Minister Andy Burnham faces mounting pressure to recognize the urgent need to adapt to the climate crisis.
Additionally, Europe’s recent heatwaves have triggered significant economic impacts. A June heat wave across European countries cost the UK economy $1.5 billion, and drought conditions are exacerbating food security concerns.
