On October 31, Okinawa Prefectural police arrested 21-year-old U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Calvin Montoya Cardona, who serves at Camp Hansen. The suspect was found to have an alcohol level more than twice the legal limit and admitted guilt for driving under the influence during a military curfew.
The incident occurred in Okinawa City amid a curfew imposed on all U.S. personnel following a robbery-related murder in Naha that involved another Marine.
Japan’s Foreign Ministry has protested to the U.S. Ambassador to Tokyo after the arrest of a Marine on suspicion of robbing and murdering an Okinawan woman.
