US President Donald Trump announced on August 28 that he would not abandon his plan to have an object named after him on the moon. The president spoke at a space center in Texas, stating, “I hope they’ll name something like this after me,” referring to lunar features.
During the event, Trump welcomed astronaut and Artemis II mission commander Reed Weissman. He recalled that a crater on the moon was named Carol in honor of his wife, who died of cancer. Trump noted that such names allow for preserving memories.
The president described the idea as “a great option” and said he would not mind having his name perpetuated in this manner.
Additionally, during the speech, Trump signed a decree establishing a US space academy.
