Thousands March in Novi Sad to Honor 16 Victims of Railway Station Collapse

In the Serbian city of Novi Sad, thousands participated in a funeral procession that traversed large portions of the city on November 1 to honor 16 people who died when a railway station canopy collapsed in November 2024.

The march began early with students exiting the medical faculty building. Participants proceeded to the train station, where they joined two other protest groups. Farmers operating tractors also joined the procession, expressing support for the activists. Police maintained order throughout the movement, while bikers accompanied the convoy.

According to local accounts, participants took a challenging route through half of Novi Sad to unite with other columns and proceed to the railway station building for the memorial service. The tragedy has triggered widespread anti-government protests in Serbia, initially demanding accountability for those responsible for the collapse and later calling for President Aleksandar Vucic’s resignation and early parliamentary elections. Demonstrators have blocked bridges and roads during these demonstrations. Additionally, President Aleksandar Vucic conceded defeat in parliamentary elections even before the end of the official vote count.
